Week 15: NOSTALGIA

The word of the week is nostalgia. Being nostalgic is one of my favorite past times. Idk, maybe it’s the historian in me. There is nothing more fun than going through old pictures, especially because I was a really weird kid lol. The songs I chose this week were pivotal to me as a child… not sure if that’s a good thing. I am linking the music videos to these songs because nothing is more iconic than early 2000s music videos. I remember watching MTV with my sister in her room every Saturday morning… how she got her TV taken away. Anyway, this playlist was so hard to make… too many bops from the past.

I fly like paper, get high like planes

M.I.A.

Monday:

“Paper Planes”- M.I.A.

This honestly might be my favorite song of all time, across all genres.
I will never forget putting this song on my green apple colored iPod Nano and dancing to it for my family. It was Christmas time in like 2008, and it was my second time being around my sister in law. I was putting on a SHOW in the den, doing the “Kendra” dance. The best part was that I had my earbuds in, so no one else could hear the music. Such a weird child, loves it. I am thankful that social media wasn’t around back then lmao.

If you wanna be with me, baby, there’s a price to pay, I’m a genie in a bottle

Christina Aguilera

Tuesday:

“Genie in a Bottle”- Christina Aguilera

I remember my friends in my pottery class my senior year of high school used to roast me for loving this song. I don’t care what they said, or whatever anyone else might have to say… this song is not sexual, and I will take that to the grave.

This is for boss bitches, for money makin’ b*tches, all my ladies, throw your hands in the air, I got Patron in my cup and I don’t give a f*ck

Ester Dean

Wednesday:

“Drop it Low” – Ester Dean ft. Chris Brown

I credit this song for giving me my boss b*tch attitude… and my choice of tequila lol.

You’re my doll, rock and roll, feel the glamour in pink

Aqua

Thursday:

“Barbie Girl”- Aqua

I remember when this song was the most controversial thing in the fifth grade lol simple times.

Okay, lil’ mama had a swag like mine (yeah), she even wear her hair down her back like mine (yeah)

Lil Wayne

Friday:

“Lollipop”- Lil Wayne ft. Static

Would it be a playlist from my childhood without Weezy? NO. It’s songs like this one that baffle me… how was I allowed to listen to this. I remember my mom explaining the meaning of this song to me… iconic. I used to skip Bible study on Sundays and listen to Tha Carter III on my iPod #GodBless

‘Cause they be all up in my business like a Wendy interview, but this is private, ‘tween you and I

Mariah Carey

Saturday:

“Touch My Body”- Mariah Carey

Mariah is queen and this music video will forever be iconic. It’s my favorite of all time.

Easy V doesn’t come for free, she’s a real lady, and as for me, haha, you’ll see

Scary Spice

Sunday:

“Wannabe”- Spice Girls

You know this had to be on the playlist. I have a confession though… I have never seen Spice World.. Brb gotta go watch it.

Have a fab week! ❤

XOXO

Week 14: HUSTLE

The word of the week is HUSTLE. I chose this word because of my current means of making money lol. Graduating during a pandemic and into a sh*tty economy sucks, but given the fact that I have a spending addiction and applied to go back to school I need $$$. You can catch me listening to this week’s songs while I deliver food and haggle with Karens on Facebook Marketplace. #prayforme

There’s a full court pressure, I’m just goin’ for the two, if I’m open for the three, I’ma take it in a second, even if there’s one second, I’ma make it, it’s nothin’

Lil Wayne

Monday:

“Hustler Musik”- Lil Wayne

You already know that Tha Carter II is my favorite Lil Wayne album. This might be my favorite song off there. It’s a v motivational song for me- take opportunities that are presented to you. I love these lyrics because it makes me feel like I have some semblance of basketball I.Q.

Grindin’ for all my sh*t, yeah, I’m grindin’ for all my sh*t, I put time into all this sh*t

Lil Wayne

Tuesday:

“Grindin’”- Lil Wayne ft. Drake

Another motivational song from Wayne. Is it obvious that I love him? Tbh, I forgive him for endorsing “orange”. I honestly think he did it to secure that pardon… can’t blame him.

If it ain’t about the money (Hello?), ain’t no use in you ringin’ my line, stop wasting my time (bye bruh)

T.I.

Wednesday:

“About the Money”- T.I. ft. Young Thug

The ultimate hustler… would this week’s playlist be complete if it didn’t have T.I. on it? I think not. I live by these lyrics rn tbh.

Don’t bother me, I’m workin’

Diddy

Thursday:

“Workin”- Diddy ft. Travis Scott & Big Sean

This song literally got me through my senior year of high school. I mean I had it on loop on YouTube. Still relevant today.

Brought out the pink Lamborghini just to race with Chyna, brought the wraith to Chyna just to race in China

Nicki Minaj

Friday:

“Rake It Up”- Yo Gotti ft. Nicki Minaj

I secretly (honestly not so secretly) wanted to be a stripper growing up. Respect to their hustle. Also, I must confess how much I love these lyrics, gets stuck in my head every time.

Tell the young high school kids keep dreamin’, because they sure do come true

Drake

Saturday:

“Schemin Up”- OB OBrien ft. Drake & P. Reign

I feel like this song is so underrated. It’s such a vibe, especially rn in my life. Speaking it into existence… I am going to be financially independent by the end of the year.

Ordered her the filet, told ’em, ‘Butterfly it, she’ll love it.’, she used to soda and nuggets, she really just out here thuggin’

Drake

Sunday:

“Stay Schemin”- Rick Ross ft. Drake & French Montana

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with chicken nuggets lol.

Keep hustling heauxs ❤ loves you

XOXO

-Mer

Week 13: PURE

The word of the week was inspired by Young Thug, and his definition of pure… people you rarely eye. After being a delivery b*tch for two weeks, I have been exposed to really sh*tty behavior. That in combination with the white supremacist terrorists trying to take down democracy, has been overwhelming. I hate that pureness is a rarity. *insert the golden rule* But for real, it costs nothing to be a decent human being. Some of y’all weren’t raised right, and it shows.

I got a pure soul, I don’t do the hate, you don’t worry ’bout fittin’ in when you custom made

Drake

Monday:

“Views”- Drake

I have said it before, and I will say it again… this is my all time favorite Drake album. It will always remind me of summer ’16 riding through Atlanta with my sister. What a “pure” time. Excuse me while I bedazzle a t-shirt with these lyrics on it to remind people to be themselves and be nice.

She never need a man, she what a man need

The Weeknd

Tuesday:

“Snowchild”- The Weeknd

IDK why, but this song sounds so angelic and pure to me. Also, the lyrics above are 100% accurate lol.

Real friends, how many of us? How many of us, how many jealous? Real friends, it’s not many of us, we smile at each other, But how many honest? Trust issues

Kanye West

Wednesday:

“Real Friends”- Kanye West

I am so glad to have real and true friends. I have had the opposite, and they suck. This song calls out all the fake, impure people who call themselves friends… please do some inner reflection and change. Thank you.

And all is fair in Love and War, she’s pure, so pure, like the love that is so uncut and raw, and clean, so clean, as opposed to what I offered

The Weeknd

Thursday:

“Adaptation”- The Weeknd

I feel like these lyrics are often true, unfortunately. While some people come into relationships with good intentions, others enter them with bad intentions. F those people.

Look, I love her curves but what’s more preferred, is the way she articulates words

Joey Bada$$

Friday:

“Love Is Only a Feeling”- Joey Bada$$

This song gives me pure love vibes… #goals.

Spendin’ time spinnin’ out toward a desire that wasn’t pure, born before the virus was cured, pitch perfect, violins on the floor

Frank Ocean

Saturday:

“Purity”- A$AP Rocky ft. Frank Ocean

My take away from this song is to not let the impurity of this world and all the sh*tty people in it taint your pureness.

‘Cause I don’t wanna cry, don’t wanna cry, nothing in the world could take us back, to where we used to be

Mariah Carey

Sunday:

“I Don’t Wanna Cry”- Mariah Carey

This is my theme song lol. I am a very empathetic person, and quite frankly I could really use a break from crying… so please everyone just behave. A side note, I think Mariah is super pure, so I knew I had to put her on here.

XOXO

Week 12: B.A.B.E.

The word of the week is actually an acronym… Bad Ass Bitch Energy. This one goes out to all my babes out there. It’s kind of nerdy, but one of my favorite things about hip hop is the usage of acronyms. Anyway, who needs big d*ck energy when you have bad a** b*tch energy. I’ve already made a playlist for confidence, but one can never have too many reminders that they are the sh*t. Confidence is something that can be fragile. *insert me talking about my middle school trauma*… But for real, when I was completely ditched by my friend group in middle school, my confidence took a big hit. Nicki Minaj really got me through those days. Honestly, it wasn’t until recently that my pre-seventh grade confidence has come back… a big thanks to all female rappers creating unapologetic music. Sidenote, all my former “friends” who pretended I didn’t exist are all lame af now… so smpd (that stands for suck my proverbial dick).

If I had a dick, I would pull it out and piss on ’em (Psss), let me shake it off

Nicki Minaj

Monday:

“Did It On’em”- Nicki Minaj

The lyrics above are some of my all time favorite lyrics EVER to recite. This song is literally such a perfect f em song. If I put this song on, leave me be.

Im representin’ for the bitches, all eyes on your riches

Trina

Tuesday:

“Da Baddest B***h”- Trina

Trina is an og bad b*tch. Taking these lyrics to heart with all of my hustles lol, but for real financial independence is the goal of 2021 (and so on).

I do what the f*ck I want, when the f*ck I want (uh), bitch don’t like me all you want, run up, bet you won’t (uh)

Megan Thee Stallion

Wednesday:

“WTF I Want”- Megan Thee Stallion

Hot Girl Meg is the queen of confidence at the moment. This song is such an anthem. Do what you want, and don’t let lames hold you back.

Perfect, nobody’s perfect, my body’s perfect, bitch I’m perfect, somebody lied (lied), just watch me murk it

Nicki Minaj

Thursday:

“She For Keeps”- Quavo & Nicki Minaj

First and foremost, the music video for this song is iconic. This week’s playlist is kind of a love letter to Nicki in disguise. Also, it’s important to know your worth… Nicki taught me (said in the Yeezy taught me voice #ifykyk).

All the pretty girls know they have to tap in

Saweetie

Friday:

“Pretty Bitch Freestyle”- Saweetie

Saweetie is another confidence coach, whose instagram is perfection (trying to figure out how I can be adopted by her and Quavo lol). Pretty bitch music is the only music I want to hear.

I support the naked hustle, shake your money maker, ooh, shake that a** on the pole, I’ma throw that cash on the floor, ooh

Mulatto

Saturday:

“Bounce”- Mulatto

This song is a classic example of women supporting women… Ramona would approve (that was a reference to the Real Housewives of New York… in case you’re uneducated).

And who gon’ tell him that my bitch is getting her degree? And when we say it’s Hot Girl Summer, we ain’t talkin’ ’bout degrees

Nicki Minaj

Sunday:

“Hot Girl Summer”- Megan Thee Stallion ft. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign

Nicki and Megan= the dynamic duo of inspiring confidence. I love the message behind this song: be unapologetically hot, know your worth, get an education… so you can get your own $$$.

Take this playlist and go forth and prosper with your B.A.B.E. ❤ loves you all

XOXO

-Mer

Week 11: FRESH

The word of the week is FRESH. It’s probably just the new year (or maybe the extra sleep I am getting), but I feel refreshed. These songs give off such a fresh vibe. It is truly impossible for me to be in a bad mood listening to these songs. The other day it literally felt like spring outside. I went for a walk and tested out this playlist… #perfect. Now that Christmas is over, I am done with winter. *impatiently waiting for spring* My advice for the week is to let sh*t go and start fresh. Here’s to new beginnings 🙂

Beautiful mornin’, you’re the sun in my mornin’, babe

Kid Cudi

Monday:

“Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1”- Kanye West ft. Kid Cudi

When I was in college (laying in bed when I should have been getting ready), this was my go to song to start my day off on a positive note. A big shout out to my sister for introducing me to this song back in the day. I couldn’t choose her favorite lyrics to feature… lol #ifykyk.

Different color diamonds, I’m a peacock

Young Thug

Tuesday:

“Killed Before”- Young Thug

In my honest opinion, I think this might by Thug’s most slept on song. It’s just so refreshing. A fun story: The start of my summer semester in 2018 I was laying by the pool (lowkey miss being in college). I decided to make a playlist for the summer… this was the only song I put on it. I mean it’s just that good.

I’ma need fresh air, What I need? Fresh air (what I need, what I need), I need to get out on my own

Future

Wednesday:

“Fresh Air”- Future

I think spring and summer 2018 was just such a great time for me. This album was truly the soundtrack of my life then. Sounds so fresh (plus it has fresh in the title… you know I loves it).

Doin’ what you doin’, just to get you where you goin’, yeah I see it, baby

Miguel

Thursday:

“Girl With The Tattoo Enter.lewd”- Miguel

I love when this song comes on shuffle. IDK sometimes some songs just feel so heavy. When this song comes on, I feel refreshed. What a vibe.

If we can’t live forever, baby, it is now or never, and if nothing I guess I’ll see you in Heaven

Mariah the Scientist

Friday:

“RIP”- Mariah the Scientist

Mariah the Scientist is such a reFRESHing new artist. Patiently waiting for her to blow up. This song sounds so fresh and new… love it. When the beat switches… *chef’s kiss*

You be heavy in my mind, can you get the heck out? I need rest now, got me bummed out

SZA

Saturday:

“Good Days”- SZA

This song is a blessing by a literal angel. IDK what else to say… I mean I’m speechless. Can SZA start leading everyone on a daily meditation?

Some day, some day, some day, I wanna lay down, like God did, on Sunday

PARTYNEXTDOOR

Sunday:

“Ghost Town”- Kanye West ft. PARTYNEXTDOOR

Kanye might be highly problematic, but his music is still fresh… even though his politics aren’t *insert side eye*.

Enjoy my loves! And remember to stay fresh ❤

XOXO

-Mer

Week 10: REDEMPTION

The word of the week is REDEMPTION. I feel like it’s a great word to take us into the new year. Redemption implies forgiveness, but to me it also implies second chances and proving to yourself that you can make it despite past failures. (Literally kicking myself for not including any Gucci). I feel like I’m very stubborn when I make decisions. I don’t really allow myself to change my mind when it comes to major life choices, but I’ve been working on this and want to continue it into 2021. Happy New Year betches!

But second chances, that ain’t how you livin’, redemption on your mind, I’ll never be forgiven

Drake

Monday:

I love it when a song title matches my word of the week lol. Redemption is a word that can get you in your feels… so Drake is perfect for that. TBH this was his last great album don’t @ me.

You’ve been down from the go, recognition is what you want, and it’s something I should know

Bryson Tiller

Tuesday:

Plain and simple, you can’t redeem yourself unless you right your wrongs.

Each time I find myself flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race

Frank Sinatra

Wednesday:

A few curve balls in this week’s playlist. As Spotify says, I am a genre luster lmao. Had to include this song because it’s a classic. You’re bound to make mistakes in life, but you can come back from them.

Time always kills the pain

Gwen Stefani

Thursday:

Moving on and letting go of resentment is very redeeming. Also, this music video is iconic. We stan Italian Gwen.

This sh*t took some time, bro, finally get my shine on

21 Savage

Friday:

When all is said and done, only you can redeem yourself… lol at my attempt to lay some Morgan Freeman knowledge. He deserves a Grammy for this tbh.

The sun came out (The sun came out), I went and bought a drop-top

Gunna

Saturday:

This song feels so positive… we know I love that. Also, Obama has this song on his favorites of 2020. I mean what more can I say the man has taste.

Back on the ledge, you don’t have to die, I see the pain fallin’ from your eyes, back on the ledge, you don’t have to cry, I see the tears fallin’ from your eyes

SAINt JHN

Sunday:

This song feels redeeming for personal reasons. I don’t think I’ve included SAINt JHN before on my playlists… lots of love to him.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this week’s line-up per usual. Lots of love ❤

XOXO

-Mer

Week 9: LIBATION

The word of the week is LIBATION. I have to admit that this word was inspired by one of my favorite shows… The Real Housewives of Potomac. It’s my birthday week, so I plan on indulging in several libations. This week’s playlist consists of some of my favorite songs that never fail to turn me up lol. Anyway, pour one out to me this week. #bottomsup

Shoutout GiGi that’s my boo, she know that I claim

Playboi Carti

Monday:

“wokeuplikethis*”- Playboi Carti ft. Lil Uzi Vert

I love this song solely because I love singing these lyrics (I have no explanation for this lol). Anyway, this song title reminds me of my middle school self. I used to go to school and brag about how I woke up like this (tbh I looked a mess). I also hated people who were copy cats, so this song is very on brand. #GodBlessMiddleSchoolMer

Scotty too Hotty, that’s Scotty too Hotty, She crankin’ a worm on the pole (yeah)

Quavo

Tuesday:

“Too Hotty”- Quality Control, Migos ft. Eurielle

I love this song primarily because the beat is so mesmerizing (a shout out to one of my favorite producers… Southside). You know how people do like the superman pose to feel more confident before a big event, I just listen to this song.

Pick up the phone, Macaulay Culkin, baby, Home Alone (Home Alone)

Quavo

Wednesday:

“pick up the phone”- Young Thug, Travis Scott ft. Quavo

Honestly, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like this song. It always puts me in a good mood. Also, Quavo’s verse is the best.

She flew from Atlanta, she easy to handle, was piped when I met her

Gunna

Thursday:

“NASTY GIRL / ON CAMERA”- Gunna

According to Spotify, this was my favorite song of the year. I made my birthday playlist weeks before Spotify wrapped came out. I love that my most listened to song is also the song I chose to be my birthday song.

I put charisma in my lingo and she fell for me, I gave her realness, and that’s all she gonna get from me

Future

Friday:

“The Percocet & Stripper Joint”- Future

Another song whose beat I’m obsessed with thanks to Southside. This song is just a vibe. I feel like I am probably going to be hungover (I have a bottle of patron and I haven’t really had much to drink in a few months lol) and it gives off hangover vibes.

I got water (Diamonds), Patek water (Diamonds), Plain Cartier (Diamonds, yeah), too much water (Diamonds, too much water)

Gunna

Saturday:

“Diamonds”- Young Thug ft. Gunna

Gotta have a song that features my birthday presents… lmao.

To riches from rags, I just believe in myself and somehow, I made it out the block (Woah)

NAV

Sunday:

“Friends & Family”- NAV

Isn’t this beat just… *chef’s kiss*? Anyway, thanks to all my friends and family for celebrating me this week. Lots of love ❤

XOXO,

-Mer

Week 8: TRUTH

The word of the week is truth. Another pillar of being a Sagittarius is honesty, brutal honesty. I took a class called careers in middle school four times (yes I know that’s ridiculous). Anyway, we took a quiz to figure out what we value. After taking it four times and getting the same answer, I think that it’s pretty clear that I value honesty the most. I really don’t understand dishonesty. Like it’s really hard for me to lie. I have no poker face. As soon as I try to be deceitful, a big cheshire grin appears on my face (honestly it’s not ideal). Tbh, I think that if everyone was more honest, the world would be a significantly better place. Brutal honesty is better than keeping someone in the dark, so just tell the truth all the time, no excuses.

Paint me a picture with your true colors

The Weeknd

Monday:

“True Colors”- The Weeknd

Some people are really good at hiding who they really are, but their true character eventually comes out. This song perfectly captures the desire for people to tell you the truth.

Aye just do me this favor, you give it time, time reveals

Future

Tuesday:

“Real and True”- Future & Miley Cyrus ft Mr.Hudson

Future’s first verse in this song is directed at himself. It’s so important to be honest and check in with yourself. Go buy a journal and write down your real feelings and thoughts… it’s a real treat to look back on.

You ain’t never told no lie, you ain’t never told no lie

Drake

Wednesday:

“No Lie”- 2 Chainz ft. Drake

This is my theme song lol. No cap. No Kizzy. I really cannot lie. No lie.

I was gon lie to you but I had to tell the truth, I’m just bein’ honest

Future

Thursday:

“Honest”- Future

Someone really needs to Future’s natal chart. I swear he has some sag in him. I think he is one of the most forthcoming artists, which is why he is one of my favorite rappers. He shares the good and bad with listeners. It’s so natural and authentic… love it.

Would you share your flaws with me?

Friday:

“Honesty”- Pink Sweat$

Opening up to people can be really scary, but it’s so important to be honest even if it’s hard and you’re sharing deep stuff. If you’re sharing it to someone who really cares about you, they will accept it and still love you.

‘Cause what’s real is somethin’ that the eyes can’t see, that the hands can’t touch, that them broads can’t be, and that’s you, never let ’em see you frown

Saturday:

“Crooked Smile”- J.Cole ft. TLC

It’s difficult to tell what’s real in the age of social media. People have access to apps (or surgeons) that make them look unrealistic, and this sets an unrealistic beauty standard to live up to. I love this song because it encourages you to be true to yourself by accepting your appearance. The real truth and beauty of a person is inside them.

Be honest, honest, honest, are you honest? ‘Cause I’m honest, honest, honest, let’s be honest

Baby Keem

Sunday:

“HONEST”- Baby Keem

This is my theme song when I’m done with the bullsh*t of the world. I know that I’m always honest, but it can be hard to tell when some people are lying. It seems like lying comes second nature to some people. #GodBless

XOXO,

-Mer

Week 7: FREEDOM

Being on brand with sag season, the word of the week is FREEDOM. I could have a whole philosophical discussion about how true freedom isn’t attainable (I mean I do have a degree in sociology lol), but there are moments where I feel completely free. It’s these brief moments that I live for. In these moments, it feels like all the stress and pressure that’s put on me (mostly by myself) is lifted. When the beat of a song drops, when the airplane nestles into its maximum altitude, when I lay out in the summer sun and close my eyes… these are some of the moments when I feel completely weightless. Because those last two things aren’t really possible right now (Gob bless), I’m solely relying on music to make me feel free and happy.

The songs I chose for this week weren’t really chosen for their lyrics, so instead of doing quotes, I’m including the producers. TBH, one of my favorite things to do is look at a song’s credits and guess who produced it. (Can’t even listen to music without being a nerd)

Monday:

“Can’t Feel My Legs”- Don Toliver

Produced by FORTHENIGHT, FREAKEY! &WondaGurl

I think Don Toliver knew what he was doing with this one. I mean the man starts floating in his own music video… weightless.

(I realize that this is the second stripper heavy video I have shared in the past week… If my stance was unclear, I fully love and support strippers)

Tuesday:

“That’s It”- Future & Lil Uzi Vert

Produced by Nils & Wheezy

Damn Wheezy that’s a wave… if I can’t be on vacation at least I can pretend. Mentally, I’m on the beach in Puerto Rico, doing a little slow dance with myself, mojito in hand.

Wednesday:

“All Day”- Yak Gotti ft. Lil Gotit and Lil Keed

Produced by Bobby Raps

I love this beat so much. I don’t know what that sound is, but I’ve never heard it before… makes me feel lost in the sauce.

Thursday:

“Wavy (Remix)”- Lil Keed ft. Travis Scott

Produced by Earl on the Beat

Really the theme of the week is songs that put me in a trance, and this does just that.

Friday:

“Turn On the Lights”- Future

Produced by Marz & Mike WiLL Made-It

This just might be my favorite beat of all time. It makes me want to lie down in dark room and just zone the f*ck out.

Saturday:

“MEGATRON”- Nicki Minaj

Produced by Andrew “Pop” Wansel & NOVA WAV

Does anyone else tie their memories to songs? I have so many great memories riding around in the car with my sister listening to music. Anytime I listen to this song, I’m mentally back in the car with her, windows rolled down, music blaring, just vibing ❤

Sunday:

“Topanga”- Trippie Redd

Produced by ChopsquadDJ

As soon as this song comes on, the volume goes up. It’s such a vibe, makes me feel like a real hippie. Trippie Redd lives up to his name. P.S. this song feels spiritual, which is why it got the Sunday spot.

Enjoy!!!

(P.S. I really tried to make my best friend proud this week by including some reaction gifs.. Loves you hunny)

XOXO

-Mer

Week 5: LOVE

I feel like “love” is a word we put too much importance on, but at the same time we don’t put enough. In movies, there’s always a focus put on who says I love you first and whether the other person says it back. I think that if I am ever in a relationship, I would for sure be the one to say it first. I grew up in a home where the word love is used in abundance, as it should be. I really don’t think people say “I love you” enough. There’s just so much pain, self inflicted or from outside forces, judgement, feelings of being unwanted or excluded, and hatred in the world. As corny as this is to say (tbh I’m kind of cringing at myself lol), love fixes these feelings. I try to tell everyone I love them, unless I think it is definitely going to weird them out. Love is just so powerful, and it feels good to say and to hear. I f*cking love the word love (almost as much as I love the word f*ck). To whoever is reading this… I love you (fr I don’t say things I don’t mean).

If I didn’t ride blade on curb, would you still love me? If I minimized my net-worth, would you still love me? Keep it a hundred, I’d rather you trust me than to love me, keep a whole one hund’, don’t got you, I got nothin’

Kendrick Lamar

Monday:

“LOVE”- Kendrick Lamar ft. ZACARI

The perfect modern day love song. I love the lyrics “I’d rather you trust me than to love me”. It reminds me of some of 21 Savage’s lyrics, “I’d rather have loyalty than love”. I think love, loyalty, and trust are the three keys to any relationship… big shoutout to my mom.

Love, love, love, love, long as we got, love, love, love, oh, long as we got (love)

SZA

Tuesday:

“Love Galore”- SZA ft. Travis Scott

SZA would definitely revoke my status as a fan if she heard me “singing” this one (but I love it lol). There’s a lot of sh*t in life, highs and lows, but as long as you love yourself and have people to love and love you back, everything’s fine.

Even though we’re going through it and it makes you feel alone, just know that I would die for you, baby, I would die for you, yeah

The Weeknd

Wednesday:

“Die For You”- The Weeknd

An anthem for unconditional love. This song reminds me of fighting with my sister. Even when we are in the midst of a fight, I always know that she’s there for me, and I would literally die for her #nocap. Real love withstands disagreements.

And for your loving, I’ma die hard like Bruce Willis

Nicki Minaj

Thursday:

 “Your Love”- Nicki Minaj

My personal anthem in middle school for all my celebrity crushes (lol). Anyway, I love this song so much. It’s still a classic. It sounds so mesmerizing, and really captures the feeling of being loved. (Again shoutout to my mom)

Bonus: The music video is just as amazing and dreamy.

I need love and affection, love, love, love, love and affection, love, love

Future

Friday:

“Loveeeeeee Song”- Rihanna ft. Future

Honestly, Future inspired the word of the week (see my Insta post), so I had to include this one. Everyone needs love and affection, especially during this f*cked up year. Remember you have to give love and affection to receive it.

But now you’re grown up, so fly it’s like a blessing, but you can’t have a man look at you for five seconds, without you being insecure

Lil Wayne

Saturday:

“How To Love”- Lil Wayne

IMO this is an anthem for self love. You have to love yourself before you can love someone else. This might be one of my favorite Lil Wayne songs ever (an accomplishment). Again, a song that got me in my feels in middle school and has an incredible music video. #YMCMB #4EVA lol

You make me, make me wanna, wanna stay long, love you

Mariah Carey

Sunday:

“Stay Long Love You”- Mariah Carey ft. Gunna

I LOVE Mariah Carey (hence why she’s been in 3 out of 5 playlists so far). Anyway, this song captures the feelings of just wanting to be in the company of those you love. Shoutout to all my friends who hang out/ talk with me for hours and hours. Love y’all ❤

As usual, hope you enjoy and remember ELE (everybody love everybody)!

XOXO

Week 4: Feminist

This week’s word was inspired by the election, obviously. In general, I have very little expectations for people, especially when it comes to empathy or doing the right thing. Even though my expectations are almost nonexistent, I was still shook by the number of white women who voted for “Orange”. My message for these women is to stop internalizing sexism and realize that white men are not the group that’s under the most attack in this country. Get off Facebook and read a real book. Read something that makes you uncomfortable and puts you in someone else’s position. The demographic group “women” is large but even within all these different groups women face unique obstacles just because they’re a woman. While you may never know what it’s like to have racial discrimination added on to that, or to have to work multiple jobs to financially support your family while still having to take care of household responsibilities, have some empathy. It’s only through empathy that we can have unity, and it’s only through unity that we can have positive changes that ultimately benefit our entire society.

Feminist: A person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Monday: “***Flawless”- Beyonce Ft. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Growing up I remember the word “feminist” was like a dirty word. It was associated with “man haters”, “witches”, “radicals”, “nazis”, etc. It is literally just people who don’t want the demographic marker of sex to negatively impact one’s opportunities in life. It’s called EQUITY… Google it.

Oh I’m just a girl, guess I’m some kind of freak, ’cause they all sit and stare with their eyes

Gwen Stefani

Tuesday: “Just A Girl”- No Doubt

This song is a literal anthem from an early 2000s culture queen. Being a girl at Georgia Tech, these lyrics are too accurate. Even if your experience with the opposite sex is minimal, stop staring at us like we are zoo animals. It’s uncomfortable, and we are just trying to live our lives, thank you.

Call me a bitch ’cause I speak what’s on my mind, guess it’s easier for you to swallow if I sat and smiled, when a female fires back, suddenly big talker don’t know how to act

Christina Aguilera

Wednesday: “Can’t Hold Us Down”- Christina Aguilera Ft. Lil’ Kim

I think the reason why people think they can get away with disrespectful sh*t is because they go unchecked. When people are spewing disrespectful sh*t to you, you have to set them straight. Nothing in history would have been accomplished with complacency. If you feel called to speak up, do so. I will never forget my classmates’ reactions in the 10th grade to me calling out this one guy. I was known for being super quiet (I belong to the group of individuals who are quiet because they don’t fw with people they are around not because they are shy). This guy who lived in my neighborhood started talking to me about this girl in our neighborhood, who was a “slut” because she, allegedly, opened her legs up to everyone else in the neighborhood but him. I cannot remember exactly what I said (literally would pay to recall this), but I remember the shock on my peers’ faces. I was not disrespectful. I simply and firmly told him to stop talking, and ya know what… he did.

I had my cutoff shorts on cause it was crazy hot, I walked passed these dudes when they passed me, one of ’em felt my booty, he was nasty

Queen Latifah

Thursday: “U.N.I.T.Y.”- Queen Latifah

I don’t think I know a single girl who doesn’t have some sort of story about something happening or being said based on what they were wearing (for me it was being referred to as a woman with loose morals because I wore shorts to church when I was 16). I really don’t know what it is about legs (or shoulders) that gets people so offended or conveys an open invitation for touching. While clothing does have the power to convey certain messages, context is key.

If I want to take a guy home tonight, it’s none of your business, and if she want to be a freak and sell it on the weekend, it’s none of your business, now you shouldn’t even get into who I’m giving skins too, it’s none of your business, so don’t try to change my mind, I’ll tell you one more time, it’s none of your business

Salt-N-Pepa

Friday: “None Of Your Business”- Salt-N-Pepa

See Wednesday’s description. Literally whatever a woman chooses to do with their body and their consent is absolutely no one’s business. (Periodt)

Finally found a girl that you couldn’t impress, last man on the earth, still couldn’t get this

Mariah Carey

Saturday: “Obsessed”- Mariah Carey

I don’t think I can describe a more cringe or awkward story than a man trying to impress you when you clearly are not feeling what he’s putting down. We really need to start teaching context clues in like Pre-K.

Now a man will take a good girl, and he’ll ruin her reputation, but when he wants to marry, well, that’s a different situation

Dolly Parton

Sunday: “Just Because I’m a Woman”- Dolly Parton

Four words: F*ck the double standard. That’s all.

Per usual, enjoy this week’s playlist.

Lots of Love ❤

XOXO,

Mer

Week 3: Motivation

The word of the week is MOTIVATION. What motivates me is relentlessness (that’s the subword of the week lol). I love artists who embody a relentless spirit. Life is full of disappointments and plans that don’t pan out, this year has been full of them, but it’s important to stay motivated and stay relentless. When you go through hard phases in your life, you have to come back with the same energy those hardships throw at you. Side-note: most of these songs not only have lyrics I find motivating but also very motivating beats, ya gotta love it.

Raised up the bar, don’t do the limit

Gunna

Monday:

“RELENTLESS”- Gunna ft. Lil Uzi Vert

This song embodies doing whatever it takes to get to where you want to be. It also encourages you to push further and raise the bar higher.

And since a man can’t make one, he has no right to tell a woman when and where to create one

2Pac

Tuesday:

“Keep Ya Head Up”- 2Pac

The theme song of 2020. If the results of the election don’t pan out great, then the message of this song is even more important. Also, shoutout to 2Pac for realizing that men have no say in what women should and should not do with their bodies.

‘Cause I’m right so I gots to win (Uh, uh, uh), break bread with the enemy (What?), but no matter how many cats I break bread with, I’ll break who you sendin’ me (Yeah)

DMX

Wednesday:

“X Gon’ Give It To Ya”- DMX

This beat really gets me going. Overall, it’s just a great hype song. A great song for “hump day” to get you through the rest of the week. It’s really a “dont f*ck with me” anthem… love it.

I spit it through the wire, man, there’s too much stuff on my heart right now, man, I’d gladly risk it all right now

Kanye West

Thursday:

“Through the Wire”- Kanye West

Just the production of this song is motivational. Being able to find a creative outlet when you’re going through something extremely painful is not only therapeutic but also very courageous. This song is just so inspiring- don’t let your circumstances stop you from pursuing your goals.

I’ve been gettin’ paper, paper (racks), made a whole M without a motherf*ckin’ major label

Key Glock

Friday:

“Son of a Gun”- Key Glock

I love that this beat samples classical music. TBH when I really need to buckle down and get work done, I play classical music. It’s very motivating.

Stay down on his grind, put the crown on the hustle, ayy, I could show you how to juggle anything and make it double,

T.I.

Saturday:

“Rubber Band Man”- T.I.

Another iconic beat. I truly feel that the instrumentals of a song are what motivates me the most. Side note: I love the story behind this nickname.

The one and only, you can’t clone me, got a lot of haters and a lot of homies, some friends and some phonies

Mike Jones

Sunday:

“Still Tippin'”- Mike Jones ft. Slim Thug and Paul Wall

Again, another great beat. I love that this song has 3 iconic southern rappers on it. The story of southern rap is truly motivational on its own.

Enjoy and stay motivated!

XOXO,

-Mer

Week Two: Reflection

I define reflection as looking back to the past, not letting what happened define you, but using it to strengthen yourself. This week’s playlist goes through feelings of self doubt, shame, but ultimately ends with optimism. It’s important to reflect, but not get stuck in the past.

S-e-l-f d-e-s-t-r-u-c-t-i-v-e, I need help, Cause I’ve always been s-e-l-f d-e-s-t-r-u-c-t-i-v-e

Mariah the Scientist

Monday:

“Note to Self”- Mariah the Scientist

Not gonna lie, it took me a minute to figure out what Mariah was spelling (I can’t believe I am college educated lol). Keeping on the theme of being honest with yourself, it’s important to reflect and analyze your situation. If you need help, recognize it and don’t be afraid to get it.

Voices in my head, ‘you the enemy’, I got a portrait in my head, I built a dynasty

Future

Tuesday:

“HATE THE REAL ME”- Future

Sometimes reflecting upon who you are and what you’ve gone through brings up some really crappy emotions. It can bring up feelings of self doubt and make you question who you are. Reflection is raw and painful, but it’s necessary to heal. Sometimes you have to start from a place of hate to find love. Realizing the things you don’t like and the things that hold you back sets you free.

Light it up, that’s smoke and mirrors, I even look good in a broken mirror

Lil Wayne

Wednesday:

“Mirror”- Lil Wayne & Bruno Mars

This song is all about looking at your true self. Being completely honest with yourself, even if it’s painful. You are the only person who knows exactly what’s going on inside your mind. If there is one person you need to be brutally honest with, it’s the person looking back at you in the mirror.

Who’s doper than this b*tch? Who’s freer than me?

Lana Del Rey

Thursday:

“In My Feelings”- Lana Del Rey

This song is such a mood when you are in your feels (lol). Listening to this song reminds me that it is okay to feel and be emo, just as long as you remember that you’re a dope b*tch.

Looked in the mirror, but you wasn’t there, I couldn’t find ya, I’m lookin for that big, ole smile, full of diamonds, instead I found this letter you ain’t finished writin

Lil Wayne

Friday:

“Let It All Work Out”- Lil Wayne

Wayne’e eloquence in describing a very personal experience is awe inspiring. There’s comfort in knowing that people have gone through situations that you have. This song encourages me to reflect on my past but look to the future with optimism.

I used to feel so devastated, at times, I thought we’d never make it, but now we on our way to greatness (greatness, greatness), and all that ever took was patience

Joey Bada$$

Saturday:

“Devastated”- Joey Bada$$

There’s no better feeling than feeling like you’re making progress, like you are on the right track. This song just makes me feel so optimistic :).

All the troubles I can find, still, I smile, the kids will be alright, just fine

A$AP Rocky

Sunday:

“Kids Turned Out Fine”- A$AP Rocky

Another optimistic song (maybe that should have been the word of the week). This song reminds me that despite trials, mistakes, and the bullsh*t of the past, everything will work out in the end.

Per usual, hope you enjoy!

XOXO

Week One: Confidence

This year has been extremely tough, but I prefer to look at the positives (big sag energy). I’m using the rest of the year to grow myself. I am challenging myself to put myself out there more. Sometimes I can’t string words together to correctly convey my feelings. This is probably why I listen to music sixteen hours out of the day (I really don’t like silence lol). One of my favorite things to do is make Spotify playlists. I decided that it would be super dope to create a weekly playlist that corresponds with one of my favorite words and share it with whoever will listen. There will be seven songs, a song for each day.

The first word in this series is CONFIDENCE… something I am really trying to work on.

Cocky as f*ck, everything ’bout me poppin’, got face, I got body

Megan Thee Stallion

Monday:

“Cocky Af”- Megan Thee Stallion

Just the bass of this song gets me hyped up. Megan is hands down one of the most inspiring artists in the game right now. Plus, she makes me feel proud to be a #tallgirl (or if you’re a RHOA fan, a part of “The Talls” lol).

I ain’t nothing but a nasty gal now, a hey, hey, I said you said I was a b*tch now

Betty Davis

Tuesday:

“Nasty Gal”- Betty Davis

This song is so empowering. TBH, it should be every woman’s theme song since the clown has been in the oval office. If you are a real nasty gal, make Betty proud and #GoVote…

Cause we dope girls we flawless, we the poster girls for all this

Nicki Minaj

Wednesday:

“Feeling Myself”- Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé

I truly think this song was made to be a confident girl’s anthem. Both Nicki and Beyoncé are so confident in themselves that it is infectious. You can’t help but feel yourself when listening to this song.

I got my own paper, I can’t sign a deal, Mansion in Beverly Hills, I run up a check, give a f*ck how you feel

Gunna

Thursday:

“Cop Me a Foreign”- Gunna, Young Thug

This is one of my favorite songs to listen to while putting makeup on and getting ready for the day. It makes me feel like I can take on the world! In general, Gunna and Young Thug are just super inspirational to me. Love to see people living authentically (and their fashion game is on point).

Intelligent too, ooh you my sweetheart, I’ve always liked my women book and street smart

Drake

Friday:

“Fancy”- Drake, T.I., Swizz Beatz

Another great song to listen to when you are getting ready. I literally know all of the lyrics to Drake’s verse. He makes me feel proud of my degree from Georgia Tech.

You’re beautiful, and your mind is f*cking beautiful

Miguel

Saturday:

“#Beautiful”- Mariah Carey, Miguel

Mariah is literally my favorite singer of all time. She is such an inspiration and her talent of conveying emotion through her lyrics is unparalleled. I love that this song reminds listeners that beauty goes beyond looks. If Mariah says it, it must be true.

I’m the best b*tch doing it, doing it, I’m the best, best, best, best

Nicki Minaj

Sunday:

“I’m the Best”- Nicki Minaj

This was my theme song in middle school (a time that was about as rough as 2020, also a time when I lost a lot of my confidence). You know what they say, sometimes you have to fake it till you make it. I may not feel like the best right now, but I’ll get there.

Hope you enjoy and feel inspired!

XOXO

Week 6: BLAZE

In honor of the first week of sag season, the word of the week is BLAZE. It was going to be “thankful”, so it could be on brand with Thanksgiving. However, Thanksgiving has got to be one of my least favorite holidays. I don’t really vibe with the food, not to mention the shady history of Thanksgiving. Plus, I’m thankful for everything everyday. Anyway, I think “blaze” is a great way to summarize sag energy. TBH, the next two weeks are related to my zodiac sign as well.  What a great time to be alive. I wake up every morning, and I thank God I’m not boring. Shoutout to all my fellow fire signs, I see you.

Everything litty, I love when it’s hot

Gunna

Monday:

“HOT”- Young Thug ft. Gunna

The sound byte of Gunna saying “litty” plays in my head throughout the day. This is such a hype song. I play it whenever I need to look alive and be productive.

Uhh, she hot as hell, let’s call her Helen

Lil Wayne

Tuesday:

“On Fire”- Lil Wayne

First things first, Rebirth was highly slept on. I know that a lot of people disapproved of Wayne’s guitar phase, but look at rap today… exactly. Wayne has not only greatly influenced rap; he has also greatly influenced my taste in movies. I love that this song samples that song from Scarface, one of “our” favorite movies.

My energy is a bit too precious, too drenched in them blessings

Kid Cudi

Wednesday:

“Baptized In Fire”- Kid Cudi ft. Travis Scott

This song is just such a vibe. It makes me feel fly af. Why is that all the best songs never get the attention they deserve?

Y e’que la calle bota, fuego, fuego (fire, fire)

El Alfa

Thursday:

“La Romana”- Bad Bunny ft. El Alfa

I have no idea what this song says, other than when it’s saying fire (lol). Bad Bunny is fire. This song is fire. The whole country of Puerto Rico is fire. This song reminds me of turning up last spring break in Puerto Rico… I miss traveling 😦

I got that fire, come and try me, and (yeah), you can spark it up and I’ma put you out

Lil Wayne

Friday:

“Fireman”- Lil Wayne

This week’s playlist is heavy on the Lil Wayne. It’s so hard to choose my favorite song of his, but this one is definitely up there. What a classic… shhh fireman coming.

Mo’ fire, I give em’, mo’ fire, yeah

Lil Wayne

Saturday:

“Mo Fire”- Lil Wayne

This week’s playlist is turning out to be a playlist of songs I think are slept on. Tha Carter II is better than Tha Carter III (I will fight over this statement). Anyway, honorable mention for this song because it was supposed to be a part of my project for my trap music class (COVID really is a vibe killer). Maybe I’ll whip out my microphone in 2021 and give the world the podcast about Lil Wayne’s music that it deserves.

I’ma go an’ pop my sh*t, hold on, let me talk my sh*t

Migos

Sunday:

“Pop Sh*t”- Quality Control & Migos

I can’t really explain why I love this song so much. It’s great though. Listen and turn up. You’re welcome.

Per usual, enjoy this playlist and enjoy the season of the most fun zodiac sign!

XOXO
